Vasectomy is a surgical procedure for male sterilization and/or permanent birth control. During this procedure, the male vas deferens (this is the tube that allows sperm to travel from the testicles to the penis) are severed and then tied/sealed in a manner so as to prevent sperm from entering into the ejaculate and thereby prevent fertilization from occurring. Vasectomies are usually performed in a physician’s office — anaesthesia is not normally required as the procedure is not complicated, the incisions small, and the necessary equipment routine.
If the physical examination of the vas deferens are challenging, conscious sedation may be required and vasectomy will need to be performed in a surgical centre for patient comfort and to guarantee efficacy. The physician will let you know at the time of consultation whether the procedure will need to be performed under anaesthesia.
