Professional Synopsis:

Dr. Sumana Kolar Ramachandra is Senior Consultant in Liver Transplant at AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad . She is a highly qualified and well trained Hepato-pancreatobiliary and Liver Transplant Surgeon with over 15 years of experience.She completed her Masters in Surgery from St. Johns Medical College, Bangalore, and worked as a faculty in the same hospital for 3 years. She then trained for one year in Surgical Gastroenterology and Liver Transplant at Sir Gangaram Hospital, New Delhi. Before doing her ASTS fellowship in Multi-organ Trans-plant surgery (Liver, Kidney, Pancreas, Small Bowel) including Paediatric Transplants at Thomas E Starzl Institute, UPMC, Pittsburgh, USA.

After finishing her fellowship she worked as a consultant in Liver Transplant and HPB surgery at Medanta, The Medicity, and later as the chief of Liver Transplant and HPB surgery at The Columbia Asia – Liver Unit in Bangalore for a period of 2 and a half years before joining AIG Hospitals, Hyderabad she worked at Fortis Hospital Bangalore. She performed almost 2000 liver transplants.

She is adept at Living Donor Liver Transplants and multi organ transplants including liver, kidney Pancreas and Intestine. She also has gained experience in vascular surgery and trauma during her tenure in the department of General surgery at St John’s Medical College hospital. Her areas of special interest include Living Donor Hepatectomy, Small for Size Grafts in Living Donor Liver Transplants, Paediatric Liver Transplants and Complex Hepato-biliary Surgery.

She is one of the very few women surgeons in the specialty of Liver and Multi-organ Transplantation in the world and is nominated as a committee member of – Women in Transplantation at the International Liver Transplant Society. She is a Co- founder of the NGO for paediatric and geriatric care (PG Care).

Dr. Sumana has presented many award winning papers and posters in National and Interna-tional conferences and has also been acknowledged with the Young Investigators award for presentation on modulation for small size grafts at International Liver transplant Society. She is a member of numerous other medical specialties, including the American Society of Transplant Surgeons.
