Bronchial Thermoplasty: A New Therapeutic Option For Uncontrolled Asthma In Adults

What is Bronchial Thermoplasty?

Bronchial thermoplasty is an innovative, non-drug procedure developed for the treatment of severe persistent asthma and approved by FDA. Bronchial thermoplasty is performed in a bronchoscopy/ endoscopy suite and takes about an hour to complete. It is a minimally invasive procedure, and is performed under moderate sedation.
No incision is required. Post-procedure, patients are kept under observation for approximately 2-4 hours.

To be considered for bronchial thermoplasty treatment, you should:

  • Be an adult between 18-65 years old.
  • Be a non-smoker for at least the past year.
  • Have severe or persistent asthma not well controlled by inhaled corticosteroids or long-acting bronchodilator medications.
  • Be requiring repeated doses of oral Corticosteroids

How Bronchial Thermoplasty works?

Bronchial Thermoplasty helps to reduce the smooth muscle mass in the airways through delivery of controlled thermal (heat) energy to the airway walls.
The thermal energy is delivered to the airway walls over a series of 3 bronchoscopies.

Benefits of Bronchial Thermoplasty

  • Improved Asthma Control
  • Improved Functional Status
  • Reduced Flareup of Asthma
  • Reduction of Asthma Medication
