Endobariatrics

With the evolution of society and changes in human lifestyle, obesity is becoming increasingly prevalent worldwide, and obesity‑related comorbidities such as diabetes, hyperlipidemia, hypertension, and coronary heart disease are more common. The standard management for obesity and diabetes has included lifestyle changes with attention to diet and physical activity, pharmacologic treatment, endoscopic and surgical intervention.

Endoscopic Bariatric and Metabolic Therapies (EBMT) are a new addition to the treatment for obesity and diabetes. As a result, new devices and methods for bariatric and metabolic endoscopy are available for clinical use, offering new options for patients. These include devices that are placed or removed via flexible endoscopy and procedures that utilize instruments that require flexible endoscopy for the indications of weight loss or treatment of glucose intolerance (from pre-diabetes to diabetes). All these procedures are minimally invasive with utmost safety and precision. For most patients, this will be a new beginning, Endoscopic bariatric and metabolic procedures have helped many people take control of Obesity and Diabetes.

As a part of the AIG Hospitals Bariatric and Metabolic Endoscopy program, our team of experts (Physicians, Surgeons, Nutritionists, Counselors and Physiotherapists)  offer a customized, comprehensive program for individuals interested in achieving short-term and long-term weight loss and Diabetes control.

Intra-Gastric Balloons Weight Loss Program

  • The gastric balloon procedure is a new weight loss system that aims to reduce the amount eaten at a meal and increase the feeling of being fuller longer after eating only small meals. Also known as the intragastric balloon, this type of weight loss treatment can help you lose weight without invasive surgery.
  • There are several types of balloons that we offer to patients. Some are fluid-filled and some are filled with a special gas. There are some balloon systems that have one balloon and others that have two or more. Regardless of the type of balloon platform used, they all work in the same way.
  • During the procedure, a soft but durable balloon is inserted into your stomach through your mouth with the aid of an endoscope. The balloon is then filled with saline solution to occupy space in your stomach, leaving less room for large amounts of food and drink.
  • The gastric balloon is designed to be a weight loss tool that helps jump start the weight loss journey, with the balloon removal occurring after six months. It is sometimes used to help you lose enough weight prior to undergoing surgery, such as orthopaedic or bariatric surgery.

Endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty is a weight loss procedure that uses an endoscopic suturing device to reduce the size of your stomach. The procedure recreates what would occur at a surgical sleeve gastrectomy though without the need for surgery.

This procedure is ideal for those with a body mass index of 30 or more and for those where diet and exercise alone have not worked. Because the procedure is minimally invasive, there is a reduced risk of complications. Like other weight loss programs, however, a commitment to a healthier lifestyle will help to ensure long-term success and permanent weight loss.

In addition to weight loss, endoscopic sleeve gastroplasty can also lower your blood sugar and potentially address other serious weight-related problems.

All these procedures are time tested with proven efficacy in overweight, Class 1 and Class 2 obesity patients with Diabetes.
