Department of Lab Medicine
The department of Lab Medicine AIG Hospitals is spread over 80,000 square feet and functions 24×7 with an aim of providing accurate, reproducible medical reports with great precision and quick turnaround time. Lab Medicine encompasses Haematology, Clinical Pathology, Histopathology, Cytopathology, Molecular Pathology, Clinical Biochemistry, Microbiology and Serology. Departments are led by team of expert doctors with specialised training in India and abroad, supported by well-trained technical staff and phlebotomists.
Laboratories are designed based on Global norms and equipped with latest cutting-edge technology, automated laboratory solutions, pneumatic sample transportation, high-throughput machines and versatile analyzers, integrated with pre-analytical workstations and connected with automated slide stainers and image analysis systems. AIG is one of the first hospitals in India using Digital Microscopy and Telepathology.
Department of Pathology
Over 1000 blood samples from patients are processed daily. Special investigations include Bone Marrow aspiration & Bone marrow Biopsies coagulation and thrombotic profile tests, and flow cytometry. More than 25000 biopsies & 10000 FNAC, 5000 IHC samples are processed annually in Histology & Cytology respectively. Facilities: Frozen, tissue analysis for intraoperative consultations, mmunohistochemistry panel of markers for all lesions, liquid cytology and molecular pathology for complete tumour analysis.
TelePathology
Real-time robotic microscopy systems and virtual slides allow consultant pathologists to evaluate histopathology / cytology slides remotely for Rapid onsite evaluation and reporting of Endoscopic ultrasound / EBUS / endoscopic biopsy by operating a robot-controlled
motorized microscope located at a distant site (e.g. endoscopy / ERCP room). This saves time and cost for patients. This is a unique facility available only at AIG.
Department of Pathology is led by Dr Anuradha Sekaran and includes a team of 10 consultants with expertise in various specialities of Surgical Pathology. AIG Lab strength is reflected by the academic performance, publications, research activities and CMEs. Department of Pathology offers a fellowship programmes aimed to provide a comprehensive understanding of gastrointestinal pancreatic and hepatobiliary pathology and surgical pathology to build competency for speciality referral practice.

Fellowship Program
The Fellowship program is a 1-year program designed to provide a structured understanding of the spectrum of Gastrointestinal, Nephropathology, Uropathology, Pulmonary, Gynaec, Bone, ENT, Dental, Softtissue, Neuropathology and hepatobiliary pathology and to competently handle issues that arise in routine and speciality referral practice. The educational mission of the fellowship program is to provide a comprehensive clinical diagnostic and translational research training in all aspects of Surgical and Transplant Pathology with the emphasis on producing a competent academic diagnostician, a consultant, and an educator. The program aims to prepare a fellow to transition into an independent practice for both academic and private settings. The fellowship will be awarded by AIG hospitals after successful completion of theory and practical exams at the end of the 12-month training curriculum.
Oncopathology
AIG is equipped with complete Oncology related modalities like Medical & Surgical Oncology, PET Scan, Nuclear Scan, Radiology Services.
Oncology services in Surgical Pathology includes exposure to Whipples specimen, DPS, Hepatectomy specimens, Radical Nephrectomy, Prostatectomy, Cystectomy, Neurosurgical specimens, Lung lobectomy, Gynaec specimens, ENT specimens, etc. which account to over 1200 -1500 specimen per month. Fellowship in Surgical Pathology is so designed in such a way that there is emphasis on both theory and practical training, on all routine and oncology cases. Fellows have an opportunity to review all the slides and diagnose the case completely. They will have an idea of systemic approach for diagnosis of tumor of unknown primary, early cancer detection and judicial use of various supporting modalities like IHC, FISH, NGS, Molecular platform. They are trained further by Multi-disciplinary institutional meetings. The treatment planned after tumour boards has the advantage of combined consensus decisional of all specialists which leads to better outcome.
Transplant Pathology
The Transplant Pathology Fellowship offers a unique and the first of its kind opportunity that combines training in Transplant Pathology of Kidney, Liver, Pancreas, Gastrointestinal tract and Bonemarrow, all of which are emerging and challenging subspecialties in the field of pathology. AIG Hospitals is one of the emerging and leading transplant programs in India by outcomes and have a highly skilled Liver transplant, Renal transplant, Bonemarrow transplant and Cardiac transplant, Surgical & Medical consultants where treatment is guided
by internationally recommended guidelines. This fellowship aims to produce trained future transplant pathologists who are equipped with highly sought-after skills in the field of pathology.
The Surgical and Transplant Pathology Fellowship programme is a one-year fellowship that provides training in the subspecialties of transplant pathology (kidney, liver, pancreas, and gastrointestinal tract, bonemarrow) and native liver, GIT and renal pathology. Clinical material includes a diverse variety and high volume of common and uncommon transplant pathology, medical kidney, liver and bonemarrow cases. The fellow will be trained to interpret light microscopy, immunofluorescence, electron microscopy, immunohistochemistry and molecular diagnostics pertaining to transplant and native cases in the above fields. Through our official partnership with the Mayo clinic., the fellow will also gain a special perspective and unique competency in the diagnosis and hospital management of all cases. Bonemarrow transplant unit at AIG is experienced in hematopoietic stem cell transplantation which is a high end curative treatment for many relapsed and upfront hematological cancers.
Translational Research
The fellow will also have multiple opportunities to participate and lead translational research projects locally and across. Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. The fellow will take full advantage of the departmental clinical and research activities. In addition, the
Center for Translational Transplant Medicine at the AIG Hospitals is fully available for the fellow to engage in ongoing research activities.
Program Objectives
- To hone diagnostic skills in histopathology of all systems by evaluating many cases and
interpreting histological findings in the light of clinical presentation, laboratory data and
radiological findings. - To enhance knowledge in neoplastic and non-neoplastic diseases that affect the
gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary system in adult and pediatric patient groups. - To independently evaluate frozen consultations.
- To handle oncopathology specimens and reporting.
- To gain exposure in Liver/ Renal/Bone marrow transplant pathology.
- To understand the utility of ancillary techniques including molecular studies for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes in the field of liver, biliary tract and pancreas pathology.
- To gain experience in FNA cytology of Liver,/ Pancreas/ Biliary tract/ GI/ Lung/Soft tissue
- To learn multidisciplinary team approach to the treatment of patients with these diseases.
- To enhance teaching abilities through interaction with pathology trainees, students and clinicians.
- To gain experience in research techniques, write up of research protocols and utilize these techniques to complete research projects. Fellow will have the opportunity to choose /research project suitable for publication in peer-reviewed journal

Essential: Post Graduate training in Pathology (MD/DNB)
Desirable: Demonstration of interest in Surgical and Transplant Pathology
Duration of Program: 12 months
